Welcome to day 9 of our 30-day typing lesson. You have almost reached the third of our lesson. Today, we will use all the letters on the keyboard along with the shift key. As you know that the shift key is used to change between upper and lower case typing.
Today, we shall learn to type capital letters using the Shift key. This will help you write names, start sentences, and present yourself more professionally in your writing.
What Is the Shift Key?
Normally user keeps the keyboard in lower case, nd when required to type an upper casethen the user presses the shift key and then types the desired letter. Otherwise, the user can also use caps local for the upper case. Please note there are two shift keys on the keyboard. According to typing letters, a user can use any of the shift keys,s, and there is a rule to make good use of them and get the best result.
Golden Rule: Use the Opposite Hand
Here’s the one rule you must always follow:
Use the opposite hand to press the Shift key.
That means—
- If you’re typing a letter with your left hand, press Shift with your right hand.
- If you’re typing a letter with your right hand, press Shift with your left hand.
Example 1: Left-Hand Letters
To type a capital A —
- Hold Right Shift with your right little finger.
- Press A with your left pinky.
Example 2: Right-Hand Letters
To type a capital J —
- Hold Left Shift with your left little finger.
- Press J with your right index finger.
Why Opposite Hand Use Matters
Using opposite hands keeps your typing smooth. One hand holds Shift while the other types the desired letter. No awkward pauses. No slowdowns. You’ll type faster and with better flow.
Trying to press both Shift and the letter with the same hand is hard. It breaks your rhythm and slows you down. So, always follow this trick. It’s what all good typists do!

- Type proper names like Priya, Rohan, David, Smith, and David.
- Type place names like USA, India, England, etc.
- Write full sentences. Make sure each sentence starts with a capital letter.
Tips for Better Typing
- Think before you type: Say in your head — “Left Shift, right key” or “Right Shift, left key.”
- Quick tap: Press Shift just before the letter. Release both at the same time. Don’t hold Shift too long.
- Focus on ‘I’ and sentence beginnings: These are the most common capitals. Get them right every time!
