Then practicing for the SSC CGL Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) or the CHSL Typing Test requires more than just hitting 35 Words Per Minute. Your accuracy is strictly evaluated based on your reservation category. A typing speed of 40 WPM is useless if your error rate crosses the official limits set by the Staff Selection Commission.
Before you start the practice session, you must configure your baseline. We have built an exam-aware typing engine, which is provided below for free, as well as a massive learning and practice typing test with free certification. Select whether you are appearing for CHSL or CGL, choose your category (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, or PwBD), and the simulator will automatically lock in your maximum allowed error percentage. Give the test your best shot and see if your current accuracy qualifies you for final selection.

What are the Category-Wise Error Relaxations
In official SSC skill tests, evaluators calculate your error percentage out of the total required keystrokes (e.g., 2000 key depressions for DEST or 1750 for CHSL). General category candidates face the strictest cut-offs, while reserved quotas receive crucial relaxations to ensure equitable testing conditions.
SSC CHSL Error Cut-Offs (LDC / JSA / PA)
For the standard 10-minute CHSL typing test, the commission enforces a very tight accuracy margin:
- Unreserved (UR): Maximum 7% errors allowed. You must maintain at least 93% accuracy.
- OBC, EWS, SC, ST, ESM, PwBD: Maximum 10% errors allowed. You must maintain at least 90% accuracy.
SSC CGL DEST Error Cut-Offs
For the 15-minute CGL Data Entry Speed Test, the error ceilings are generally more relaxed:
- Unreserved (UR): Up to 20% errors allowed.
- OBC / EWS: Up to 25% errors allowed.
- SC / ST / PwD-Others: Up to 30% errors allowed.
Note: For specific CGL posts like Tax Assistant or DEO Grade ‘A’, the limits can drop down to 5% for UR and 7% for reserved categories. Always verify the specific notice for your target post.
SSC Typing Test Exemption Rules for PwD Candidates
SSC provides a complete exemption from the typing test to persons whose Benchmark Disability (PwBD) condition physically prevents them from operating a computer keyboard. If exempted, your final merit is decided purely on your Tier-II written marks. However, this exemption is not granted automatically.
Who is Eligible for Exemption?
- Orthopedically Handicapped (OH) / Locomotor Disability: Candidates with amputations, complete permanent paralysis of the limbs, or severe dwarfism are fully eligible.
- Visually Handicapped (VH) / Blindness: Eligible for exemption, or they may opt for a passage reader/scribe and compensatory time.
Who is NOT Eligible?
- Hearing Handicapped (HH): Candidates with hearing impairments are not eligible for typing test exemptions, as hearing loss does not affect typing mechanics.
- Minor Disabilities: Any disability that does not severely impede the physical act of typing will not qualify.
How to Claim the PwD Exemption
To successfully bypass the skill test, you must present an original medical certificate (usually Annexure-XIV or Form-V) during Document Verification or at the exam center.
- The certificate must be issued by a competent Medical Authority, such as a Civil Surgeon or Chief Medical Officer of a Government Hospital.
- It must explicitly state that the disability “is likely to interfere with Typewriting” or that you are permanently unfit to take the test.
- In cases of locomotor disability, a photograph showing the affected portion of the body must be affixed to the certificate.
If you belong to the HH category or possess a minor disability, you must clear the typing test. Use the simulator above daily, select the 10% PwD error allowance, and build your speed safely.
