This is a very exciting day because we reached on day 21 lesson and already crossed the two of third part of the free typing course. We have successfully learned the position of every letter, number, and symbol on the keyboard. Now, we move from learning to mastering every part of the keyboard. Today, we are not going to learn anything; it’s about deeper practice in building your typing speed by practicing the most common English words.
This is one of the most effective methods to see our improvement by testing ourselves by completing tasks and seeing the result of Words Per Minute (WPM). Today’s practice task aims to build automatic muscle memory for high-frequency words; we will rapidly type those words that we use too much in our language. And they are the main controller of our speed.

The 80/20 Rule of Typing Speed
Did you know that a very small number of words make up a huge percentage of all written text? Words like “the”, “and”, “you”, “that”, “for”, and “it” appear constantly becasue these are articles, prepositions, and conjunctions which are used in every sentence. The “80/20 Rule” applies here: by mastering the most frequent 20% of words, you can handle 80% of your daily typing with incredible speed and ease. This lesson in our series of free typing lessons is designed to target these exact words.
Building Blocks of Speed: Common Patterns
Our practice today will focus on two key areas:
- Common Letter Pairs (Digraphs): Before typing full words, we will practice the most common two-letter combinations in English, such as
th
,he
,er
,in
, andon
. This builds the foundational finger movements, and it’s very necessary. - High-Frequency Words: most of the practice will involve typing lists of the most common words that are made up of 2-letter, 3-letter, and 4-letter words. This repetition is what builds automaticity—the ability to type without thinking.
Day 21 Practice Task: High-Frequency Word Drills
Today’s online typing practice will feel different because it does not contain many complex symbols or difficult words. It is designed for pure speed, but you have to maintain accuracy. The goal is to let our fingers fly and build a fast, smooth rhythm.
Tips for Building Speed
- Let Go and Flow: We have done the hard work of learning the keys. Now is the time to trust our muscle memory and type with confidence. Try to stop “thinking” about each letter and let your fingers flow across the words.
- Focus on Word Shapes: By practicing again and again in diffrent tasks, you will start to recognize the physical “shape” or feeling of typing a common word like “that” or “with”. This is a sign of advancing skill.
- Use Short, Focused Bursts: When practicing for speed, a highly focused 10-minute session can be more effective than a long, distracted one. Give it your full attention.
After this lesson, you can find various time-limited tasks in our typing test and watch your WPM, CPM, and Accuracy.
